What is a Smart Meter?
In a difficult financial climate, families and business owners need to be able to keep a close eye on their spending. Estimated energy bills can throw a spanner into even the most efficient of books, making it more difficult to monitor your budget when you can only guess at the amount you will be asked to pay next.
30th April 2013: Record Breaking Month At 1Gas
April 2013 is 1Gas’ most successful month so far – we’ve achieved our highest profit in a single month yet. The previous best month has been toppled by more than 20%. In the midst of a slow economic recovery, we’re very pleased with the results. The graph below shows our steady growth in profit since summer 2011.

New Introduction Video
Our brand new 1Gas animation video was launched today and we think it’s brilliant. It’s an advert that is now live on our website and also on YouTube. At just over a minute long, it was created to promote the gas connection services 1Gas have to offer, and the benefits we can provide.
The video has been kept clean and simple to understand, with a slightly humorous tone, which we hope reflects the helpful customer service and friendly staff we aim to provide at all times. We hope you enjoy the video and welcome your feedback below.

50 Testimonials and Counting
Since day one, customer service has been key to the success of 1Gas. It’s a cliché, but it’s true. We haven’t always got it right, and where we’ve been less than perfect we’ve learnt from it.
We believe that customer service should be every part of a company’s existence and in every communication with colleagues, customers, suppliers or engineers. We strive to be a friendly, personal company that will go beyond the call of duty for customers wherever possible.
In 2012, we received 19 testimonials which are on this website. In 2013 in the first 3-4 months we’ve already had 33 additional testimonials. We’ve just crossed the 50 barrier today (52 to be exact) and we’re really pleased with this result. In this situation, we argue that words speak louder than actions thanks to the many kind customers who have spent the time speaking their opinion of us.
Some of the reviews we’ve received for our gas pipe and meter connection services include:
▪ ‘Exceptional service’
▪ ‘Could not have dealt with my order more professionally, nor in a friendlier manner’
▪ ‘Second to none for customer service’
▪ ‘Everything went like clockwork from start to finish. Very professional, helpful, and easy to deal with’
▪ ’1Gas were very co-operative – unusual for utilities providers’
▪ ’1Gas gave me brilliant service, all questions answered quickly and accurately’
We’re not complacent. We’re investing heavily in marketing, staff levels and our website to keep an optimum service at all times. We think we will continue to grow and please many more customers in the coming years. We relish the thought.

Consumer Energy Debt At Record Levels
A culmination of factors is creating problems for Britain’s household debt levels to gas and electricity suppliers. It’s recently been estimated that money owed to energy companies by domestic consumers could total more than 600 million pounds, with perhaps as many as four to five million owing a balance [an increase of around 6% from last year] and struggling to keep on top of bills. The amount owed has increased by around 25% on the previous year.

Richard was very helpful and nothing was too much trouble. Personally, for me being a gas novice in the beginning, I feel I am now fully trained and would have no problems doing this again.
Also completing the relevant forms for 1Gas were easy and clear. I did look at other suppliers and soon changed my mind when I started the form filling. Thanks Richard.

Gas Prices Settle After March Surge
A spike in gas prices during March was almost enough to prompt panic in the market, but as April temperatures finally start to rise and people have been able to turn down that central heating at last, the day-ahead prices beat a welcome retreat earlier this month.
13th April 2013: How Long Does It Take An Engineer To Fit A Gas Meter?

How Much Does A New Gas Connection Cost?
There are many factors that affect the cost of a new gas connection. They include, but are not limited to: location, size of gas supply required, number of appliances at site, pressure in the gas mains, distance from the mains to gas meter position, complexity of the works, health and safety issues, number of engineers required and more.

What Size Gas Meter Do I Need?

Why Is A Gas Supply Contract Required Before A Gas Meter Is Fitted?
Installing a gas pipe and a meter is just the first step in being able to obtain a gas supply.
For domestic consumers, where a live gas pipe connection, already exists, it’s normally simply a case of asking a domestic gas supplier (also known as a shipper) for their unit rate prices & standing/daily charge, and a gas meter (which is often free of charge). Domestic supply contracts are usually flexible whereby you can leave for another supplier providing 30 days notice, subject to bills being paid and up to date. An exception might be where a fixed term deal is agreed to fix rates for a longer period of time.

Gas Mains And Connection Service Pipe Materials
As gas comes ashore in Great Britain from a gas field (such as the North Sea or Morecambe Bay) it will enter a natural gas processing plant where the gas is purified. The gas is cleaned and contaminants such as water, sulphur and mercury are removed so that it can then be safely distributed around the country to homes, factories and offices. Processing plants in the UK include: Rampside (Barrow-in-Furness), Easington (East Riding), Bacton (Norfolk), and Theddlethorpe (Lincolnshire).

Cold Snowy March Causing Low UK Gas Reserves
Could we be running out of gas? The unprecedented cold UK March is having all kinds of impacts: tourism, farming, the economy, and no doubt, gas supplier profits too. The unpredictable British weather strikes again. Only a year ago at this time of year, Britain was bathed summer-like temperatures in the low 20s celsius. Britons were on beaches soaking up the sun enjoying the end of winter, even in northern Scotland, where all-time records were broken. By contrast, mother nature is creating a very different March in 2013.
Gas Meter Boxes Guide
Where a gas meter is required and in an external location, a meter housing (also known as a box or kiosk) is required. This is for two primary reasons, to protect the gas meter from the weather and to help secure it from being tampered with or damaged.
Why Do Gas Connections Take A Long Time?
How long should a gas connection take? A week, a few weeks, a month, a few months?
Gas connections are complex and the truth is that some individuals, companies, charities, and organisations are surprised at the length of time involved and the apparent hurdles to jump over. There is often pressure to get gas connected to a property as quickly as possible. The fastest gas could be connected to a house is around 6 weeks from start to finish. Getting gas connected to a commercial property such as a shop, office, restaurant or take away can take 2-3 months in total. We’ll talk you through below the steps to obtaining a new gas pipe and meter below.
How to Save on Your Business Gas
In order to run a successful business it is important to be aware of every single expenditure, and to constantly seek ways to reduce your costs wherever possible. Business gas prices are still on the rise, which is leading to an increasingly competitive marketplace for suppliers.

Symptoms of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
Carbon monoxide is produced when fuel such as gas or wood is not burned properly, perhaps due to a faulty appliance. It is difficult to detect because it has no smell or colour, but if it is inhaled it inhibits your blood’s ability to carry oxygen around your body and can kill.

What’s the difference between a kW (kilowatt) and kWh (kilowatt hour)?
Ever wondered what the difference is between a kilowatt and a kilowatt hour? You’re not alone. We’ll start by making it really simple and look at the components of the words themselves. Just like a kilogram is 1000 grams, the ‘kilo’ in kilowatt stands for 1000, so there are 1000 watts in a kilowatt. The ‘watt’ is the unit of power named after the Scottish inventor and scientist James Watt.

Thank you for all you have done for us in getting gas. Today National Grid arrived and installed a gas connection. We are now looking forward to getting central heating installed and being warm in these freezing temperatures. We could not have done this without your help and are so grateful to you.
Derry was fantastic. We didn’t think we could get gas, as National Grid has no record of the pipe on our land, but Derry found records of the pipe and we are now connected. Derry certainly went the extra mile to help us and we are so grateful to him for getting us a gas supply.
